You can see the popular musical version of Roald Dahl’s classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center (APAC) for four performances in May. The Rising Stars Youth Performing Arts Program, led by director Lisa Goldfarb, has been growing faster these days than the children in it.
[broadstreet zone=”54949″]In the upcoming casts of “Willy Wonka” feature 62 young people, which represents a 50% growth spurt in just one year. Goldfarb attributes the enthusiasm to the quality of the shows and the uniqueness of APAC’s Rising Stars program, “Even though there are a number of youth theater programs offered in the area, the APAC program is the one that the children and their parents select. The production values, the in-class training, the talent and dedication of the kids participating are simply not matched.”
The students range from ages 7 to 18, coming from all over Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Due to the large number of participants, there are two distinct casts for the show. Appearing in both casts are Joseph Grisanzio (Howell) in the title role, Skylar Gothelf (Manalapan) as Charlie Bucket, Matthew Tobio (Morganville) as Grandpa Joe, Max Hannan (Ocean Township) as Mike Teavee, Claudia Tawil (Ocean Township) as Violet Beauregarde and Zoe Seitz (Farmingdale) as The Candy Man. The role of Augustus Gloop is shared by Melanie Watts (Oceanport) and Haley Goldfarb (Howell), and Veruca Salt is played by Victoria Bahary (Ocean Township) and Hannah Cohen (Little Silver)
Based on the 1971 film, “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka” features an Academy Award-nominated score by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley with such memorable songs as “The Candy Man,” “Pure Imagination” and “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket.” Music director Randal Hurst enthuses about teaching five dozen young people this heartwarming music: “It’s simply the most perfect children’s show. The cast is having a blast and they sound fantastic… The big numbers are so lush that I forget I’m working with kids!”
The performance dates are Sundays, May 15 and 22, 1pm and 5pm. All tickets are $18. Director Lisa Goldfarb has more than a handful of Wonka bars up her sleeve: “’’Willy Wonka’ will be a delicious experience for the whole family, and that’s a guarantee. At each show we are featuring a special Golden Ticket giveaway, sponsored by Chocolate Works of Red Bank, and the prizes will be scrumdidilyumptious, as Willy would say!
