Maifest at Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten: Celebrating the Arrival of Spring
Maifest (or Mayfest in English) is the traditional German celebration of one of mankind’s oldest traditions – the arrival of spring and nature’s bright reawakening after winter’s cold darkness. The ancient pagan festival later took on Christian religious significance but is now a colorful, joyous part of history and culture. Maifest is still celebrated throughout Germany with the maibaum (maypole) decorated to show off the history and crafts of the town. The custom of the maypole began in the tenth century, when villagers would erect a pole in the local square and decorate it with sausages, cakes and multicolored ribbons. Dancing around the maypole, medieval citizens believed, would bring good luck and wealth. Maifest, similar to Oktoberfest, has now become a popular celebration throughout the world and has been celebrated in Cincinnati, Ohio since 1873 and Asbury Park since 2015!
The Maibock Bier is the star of Maifest. Pronounced: “My Bock”. Translation: “May Bock” This strong Bavarian lager is made during the rough winters along the Northern Edge of the Alps and served when spring arrives. Drinking a Maibock is somewhat like that first day of spring. You can taste the celebration of the sun.
Now that you know the history, let’s get drinking!
